ICCS5 Side Event: Co-developing climate services: Brokering climate knowledge from scientists to decision makers and back
February 27, 2017 @ 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm
Knowledge intermediaries and brokers play an essential role in ensuring that climate information is co-produced, collectively interpreted and communicated in ways that ensure it is relevant and decision-ready over time. There are many steps in between information production, interpretation, use and feedback, with many actors – brokers – translating, synthesizing, filtering, and formatting information to the needs of the different actors.
Objective of this Side Event
The objective of this side event is to show the crucial and varied roles that climate knowledge brokers play (on purpose or by accident) at many points along every climate knowledge value chain, and to demonstrate a methodology to collectively develop climate services which enable adaptation and resilience decision making by vulnerable communities, local governments and development actors.
This event will give participants first-hand experience on climate services co-creation, while simultaneously providing an opportunity for networking and peer exchange with like-minded professionals.
Based on their own expertise and their experiences, the participants will collaboratively design an effective climate service involving a range of actors and which contributes to achieving climate resilient outcomes. Through this experience, participants will interrogate the user based climate information knowledge value chain and draw out improvements needed to inform requirements for their context.
The session will start with an introduction to the event, as well as an intro to the most crucial aspects of climate knowledge brokering and climate services co-development. Following is an interactive part, in which participants will work together on creating a climate service for decision making at different timescales. The event will close with a reflection on the learnings of the day.
